Fly-fishing

Fly-fishing for carp is becoming increasingly popular. Some of the big names in the sport are now stalking their local waters with nothing more than a fly rod and a few flies.

The equipment used when fly-fishing for carp is very simple. A basic 6wt or 8wt fly rod, fitted with a floating line and a reel that holds LOTS of backing. A 10 foot 8lb leader and a single fly, either nymph, dry-fly or dog biscuit. We have enjoyed success using Czech nymphs, bloodworm imitations, G and H Sedge, artificial dog biscuits and the real thing superglued to the hook. Derek reports he did once catch one on a fly fished porkpie!

This is fishing to visible fish so you need to be very stealthy. However fishing is often at close quarters, so you don’t need to be a distance caster. There is nothing in freshwater as exciting as that first run of a big carp on fly tackle.
